Press and Reviews

Richmond, VA

The Deaves originated as a songwriting and recording experiment by guitarist Paul Pearce and bassist / producer Kyle Miller in Nashville TN in early 1999. The two were longtime bandmates in the Nashville rock-and-roll scene during the 1980's, playing with The Boilers, Will Rambeaux and the Delta Hurricanes and The Suffering Bastards. Kyle also played with Jane, His Wife and Dan Baird (Georgia Satellites).

Between 1999 and 2001 they recorded 10 songs in Kyle's basement and assembled a revolving set of musicians to play showcases in the Nashville area. Drummer Bob Hilburn and guitarist / keyboardist Kevin Moore became the stable members of the live band. Other players on the first recording inlcuded drummers Steve Ebe and Mark Crouch. The band was featured twice at the the BMI Songwriters Showcase in 2001.

In early 2002, Paul's job forced a move to Richmond. In early 2004, Paul re-formed The Deaves as a 3 piece band with drummer Aaron Tunnell (Animal Farm) and bassist Mike Nelson (Kinetic Element). The three began playing regular dates throughout the Richmond area in 2005 and recording a 12 song CD in Paul's home studio entitled Wired. In late 2006, Mike left the band and was replaced by Mark Tupko. The CD release occured in Jan 2007 and the band played in support of that effort in the Richmond area.

In late 2007, Aaron Tunnell announced his retirement from drumming. The band was unable to find a replacement, and stopped playing altogether.

Paul joined an alt-country band called The Velvet Marias in March 2008 and Mark continued playing with Rukus, a heavy metal cover band from south Richmond.  In December 2009, Mark recommended drummer Neal Revels. After a couple of rehearsals, the re-constituted Deaves played their first show in 2 years at the Canal Club in Richmond. Shorty afterwards they joined The Velvet Marias at The National.

The band has been featured in Southern Fried Magazine and www.IndieGuitarists.com.  You can also hear the Deaves on Richmond's 102.1 the X from time to time. Online the band can be heard on Smiling Stranger Radio.

Recordings

The Deaves first CD was never formally released. Paul made a few copies and occassionally sells them at gigs. A couple of songs off of that record may be found on this website and are often played live. The first Richmond CD, Wired, is now available at CDBaby. Look for us on iTunes, MySpace and anywhere good digital music is sold or heard!
