A running commentary.

January 8, 2010: Canal Club - Richmond
After over 2 years in deep hibernation, it was hard to believe that we had a drummer at last.  Our old friend Aaron came out and offered his blessing for new drummer Neal Revels, who did an awesome job behind the kit and brought out the BIG in all of us. I lugged my giant guitar rig out of retirement and blew out some neurons. Mark plugged in his wireless and wandered about the club, frightening people. Hey - its original music, who's to know we missed that last note?
November 9, 2007: Mile 17 - Suntrust Marathon
Firmly planted in front of a pizza place, the band put in three hours for crowds of exhausted looking runners. It was cold and got colder. Folks came by and offered lots of moral support and then split for the coffee house nearby. (Except Olympia - who stayed with us throughout). By the end of our last set we were cold, hungry and ready for a break.  Afterwards we got together someplace warm for a few beers. Brrr. Hats off to The Border on Main for the best steak sandwich I've had in years.
This proved to be our last gig with drummer Aaron.  He decided to stop playing drums and ride his motorcycle – which I can’t blame a man for wanting to do.
October 7, 2007 - Carytown Wine Festival

We played on a strip of grass next to the 7/11. I am not making this up.  A fantastic group of folks saddled up on the sidewalk and gave us the best reception we could have...on a strip of grass...next to the 7/11...but there you go - that's dedication.

Our not so dramatic return to the greatest show on the slip! A group of folks came in during the 2nd set and were awesome. CDs were sold, fives were highed (a guess I can say that), and all that.

  July 7, 2007 - Alley Katz

Playing as the second act with The Dregs, The Rulers, and NUMA (from DC), we all had a great time. I filmed the set and put a song (Wooden Bench) online. Someone through their bra at me - (for reasons of their own) - and it made for excellent (what the hell is this?) moment during the song. The rest of bands were great - we were honored to be a part of it. NUMA had the best I'm-as-skinny-as-Iggy front man I have seen in a while. Wish you were there.

This is my favorite bar in town. We had another great time. Chadd and Christy are awesome. The decor keeps the riff raff out, and the sound man is a great guy.

Description:EARLY SHOW!! The Deaves will be playing before the sun goes down, with Heidi Sidelinker, WAKEY!WAKEY!, All the Stars, and Lowry (from Brooklyn!).

The show that never happened. We played our set. But the rest of the bands bugged because the club wanted money from the headliner. Kind of a drag, when you think about it. It was an early show, and other than after work warriors, what did they expect? A bus load of high school seniors to pop in for an 18 and older show? DON'T THINK SO! Anyway, the guys in Lowry were polite, Heidi charming, and All The Stars amused. Wakey Wakey got stuck in traffic hell coming south from DC. Bless them.

The club gets a spoiler award - for not being cooler about the money. But hey, we're not the first to go through this...

I enjoyed the gigantic PA. Fun. For a good half hour. We went Legends afterwards and drank ale.

CD Release Party - Wonderland Feb 24 2007

At the end of the night, Aaron and I loaded out in the rain. A group of kids crowded in the doorway and had to move onto the sidewalk, joining the crowd that stood around eating pizza from next door. The rain fell in silver streaks against the street light. I could see my breath billow out and disappear. We were all wet. It was cold. But nobody seemed to care. The last 6 hours was a turning point for the band. A new record, new friends and great night to remember.

Thanks to Gray Gurkin (great set), Bryan the Soundman, Chad and Christy at Wonderland and all of our friends that make up the Army of Deviants.

All through May at Sine' and Poe's Pub:

Maybe I'm getting lazy, but we did a lot of stuff in May and I don't want to try to be creative on each gig. HOWEVER - May 6th and 27th at Sine' proved once again that rock and roll will save your soul. Take your medicine. The wandering wedding tribes demanded tribute and we delivered. But to be clear, there are songs we wouldn't know, couldn't know, SHOULDN'T know. Moving on.

Poe's Pub on June 2nd featured local luminaries David Schultz, Ben Jordan and the Heathens and yours truly sharing the night as part of the monthly Richmond Roots Revival show.  Bert was there. You gotta see Bert. Thanks to the Atkinsons for their generous support of the best thing going on in town. For a minute there, I saw a local music scene - flickering, guttering in the rain. Don't let it die, folks. Come on out and see what's happening.

Sine' - April 15th

Wow. Another great night in downtown Richmond. As always, you guys show up ready to...well, you know, no point in stating the obvious. Moving on - HIGH POINTS: flawless sets. Simply Awesome. My favorite song remains "Wired". If you don't know what I am talking about, come out and see on May 6. LOW POINTS: Sweet Home Alabama - you know who you are. Shame on us all!

Buckingham Tavern - April 7

The wind blew. The storm raged. The gig went on! Thanks to everyone that braved the elements to come on out. Best part - new songs; the bartender - long may she rule. Worst part - The juke box. Wow. Must be heard to appreciated.

Sine' - January 28
We were all sick from some kind of flu. Shots of whisky helped, or at least kept my throat from hurting. The last set was a blur, but I remember jumping up and down a lot. I broke my slide, but there were no injuries. Lots of dancing. Lots of people. Brown Eyed Girl remains off-limits, but we WILL rock you. Enough said. Favorite part: croaking out that Probot song just like Lemmy. Worst part: I missed last call. My pledge to YOU: We'll be back. See you soon.

Sine' - January 7, 2006

Heads bobbed. Feet stomped. Highlights: new Deaves songs...Bert!...the mystery Jager shot (thanks!)...Alex's wife's dance partner...Lowlights: No pictures. Sorry.

Sine' Irish Pub - Richmond - October 29, 2005
Amps were cranked, drinks were spilled, CDs were sold, and dudes apologized for first-set Ozzie requests. Highlights - Aaron triggering the fog machine, on-the-fly Wild Thing, and big boob Halloween costumes. Lowlights - Snoop Dog jokes and the guy in the blue tights.

Oct 29 2005
Sine' Irish Pub - Richmond - Sept 2005.
It was blazing hot. Anybody with any sense stayed in the shade. This was the club's 'Halfway to St. Patrick's Day Block Party'. Lesson learned - a glass of beer in the sun gets hot quick.

Sept 26 2005
Lakeside Tavern - Richmond - July 2005
The Gig lived up to the flyer. This is a small after-work bar in North Richmond. The regulars glowered at us over Bud Lites and chicken wings. We won them over with our usual full speed ahead approach. Had a great turnout and even the angry old dudes had a good time. Thanks to all that came early and stayed late!

My favorite flyer ever.
